BACKGROUND: The United Nations had put the disability figures in the country at 8 to 10% of the population, where as the government is making decisions on the 2.1 per cent figure provided by 2001 census. It is vital to derive the right numbers from the current census as the Planning Commission depends “heavily on such data while allocating funds and resources for the disability sector.”
To improve upon the figures a lot of emphasis is being given on DISABILITY in Census 2011. Training of Master Trainer Facilitators, District Officials and Master Trainers has been addressed rightfully this year. Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, Chief Executive Swabhiman is the member of the National Core Committee and State Resource Person for Disability for Census 2011.
To spread awareness of this process so that the 2011 census gives us proper data and to take forward the process of awareness THE DISTRICT LEVEL WORKSHOP was organized at Pantha Niwas, Baleshwar on 25th January 2011 in association with SWABHIMAN and support of WCD department, GoO.

THE PROGRAMME
The Programme was started at 11. 15 AM with the prayer by Mr. Bikram Keshari Rana of Swabhiman along with the Participants. Mr. Subrat Nayak, Secretary PRAVA welcomed all participants and briefed the objective of the workshop followed with self introduction session.
After the introductory session Mr. Bikram oriented the house on Census – 2011 and Disability with the help of Audio Visual message of Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, Chief Executive Swabhiman & Smt. Arati Ahuja, Commissioner-cum-secretary WCD Department, GoO, Film ‘Anjali’ & PowerPoint presentation followed with open house discussion.
Mr. Sanjeet Das of PRAVA requested the house to carry forward the activity as a Social Responsibility. The participants opined unanimously to carry out the activity to their maximum reach and requested to provide more posters, handbills and Flex for Block Head quarters, A video clip of Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, Chief Executive Swabhiman & Smt. Arati Ahuja, Commissioner-cum-secretary WCD Department, GoO, and District Collector for telecasting in local channels.
The Action Plan:
• College Students will Campaign in their and nearby colleges.
• NGOs will orient / sensitize PRI members and community at their project Villages along with posturing at all key points.
• CBOs will discuss in their groups and community.
• NGOs / CBOs will campaign in schools and colleges for wider coverage.
• PRAVA agreed to coordinate the activity and an information kiosk will be opened at it’s office as well
as a kiosk near the Police Line Parade ground on 26th January, The Republic Day.
• LIFE and Welfare societies for Disables, Jaleswar agreed to opened a kiosk in Jaleswar Mohatsav.
